Choosing the Right Coach

“How do I know I have found the right coach?” is a question that I hear often.  Since anyone can label themselves as a coach, it can often be difficult to know where to begin or to know if you have the right one. 

Attributes of a good coach: (a partial list)

Organized – Your coach needs to have their life in order before they help you get your life in order.

Empathetic (but not too much) – A good coach can appreciate where you are right now in your life.

Firm – A good coach will NOT allow you to indulge in excuses and rationalization as to why you are not making progress towards your goal.

Flexible – A good coach can blend behavioral styles and adapt to ANY situation as required.

Supportive – A good coach realizes that the coaching engagement is about the needs of the clients (or coachee) and NOT a showcase for the coach’s brilliance or subject matter expertise (unless asked for by the client).

Female clients tend to have more of a need to like and bond with their coach then male clients. While a personal connection can always add to the coaching relationship, it is not a requirement.  Judge the suitability of your coach by whether or not you believe your coach can help you achieve your goals. Coaching is designed to stretch you and move you out of your comfort zone…a good coach will do that for you.

Take a test drive:

Most coaches will provide a complimentary coaching session before you hire them. Take a few coaches out for a spin, see how they perform, and then decide who is the right fit.

Ultimately, you know you have the right coach if they provide a safe, non-judgmental environment to share, explore and process your thoughts and feelings.

Your coach will then challenge your assumptions, help you create a plan for the attainment of your goals and then hold you accountable for the commitments you have made.
