Here are my answers to an on-line interview I gave regarding Steven Slater and his ‘leap’ from Jet blue Airways. Enjoy.

*What is it about Steven Slater’s actions that cause the public to rally and support him?

Most people can relate to being in a situation in life where they felt overwhelmed or stressed or just tired of doing something they just don’t feel like doing. Steven did what a number of people have thought of doing but just never took action on.

*How might current economic conditions have impacted/compounded Slater’s situation? *

It may be that there have be finical pressures that have been building up on Steven; or there may have been some word’ through the grapevine’ that there may have been jobs like his that would be cut. So he felt the need to go out on ‘his own terms’.

What does the strong public response to Slater’s actions possibly suggest? *

Discontent with the slow recovery to the current economic conditions. Lack of certainty with regards to job future.

What are early warning signs of job dis-satisfaction, frustration, contempt for the public/clients, occupational stress, etc.*

As early as the time when Steven was hired, a personality profile assessment could have been done to ensure that he was a good match for the position. An incident like this typically does not happen overnight…is there a mentoring, coaching or counseling program in place that would allow for employees to anonymously to seek help without fear of retribution by the employer? Was he tired,? Was he losing weight?  Did his eating or drinking patterns change? Were his moods different? Did he withdrawal from socializing with his co-workers? While this is just a partial list, these are some possible early warning signals.

What steps should frustrated employees take? *

They could…contact a superior, write a memo, make sure they are fully utilizing their personal/vacation/sick days. On a personal side, making sure that they engage in activities that allow for stress relief i.e. physical exercise, socializing with family and friends, down time or any other activity that allows them to clear their head and recharge their batteries.

At what point should an employee throw in the towel? *

Once an employee feels that they have taken every measure within their power to correct their situation and they feel their measures have been unsuccessful, they should plan heir exit strategically. Meaning they should secure new employment while maintaining a positive relationship with their current employer as not to burn any professional bridges.

What are possible consequences of going out with a bang a la Slater?

On the positive side, there is a reality show waiting out there for him; he will get his 15 minutes of fame. On the negative side, he may find it very hard to find a job in the industry. He may find it very hard to find a job period.  On the other hand, if he was ever thinking of starting a business, now is the time. If he is unable to monetize on this incident rather quickly the expenses and overheads of managing his celebrity will catch up to him rather quickly.

What Is the Ideal Personality Type for Success

Posted by Carl Gould on August 11, 2010
7 Stage Success with Carl L Gould / No Comments

Countless books have been written on this subject. People are in satiable in their quest to find the “right” or “ideal” profile for the successful entrepreneur.

I can answer this question with one word….

YOURS!

Research has shown that there is no correlation between personality and performance. In other words, any personality style (yes, even yours) can be as successful as you want…if you apply yourself.

In the quest for finding the perfect formula of success, many biographies, books, articles, whitepaper and manifestos have been written to identify the ideal profile of success.

As a professional coach, business mentor and business advisor, I have seen all types of people with varied backgrounds be successful. I have also seen them fail. The consistent actions you take, time management and financial management are all keys to your success; and much more important than your personality type.

One effective method to becoming successful is modeling what others are doing; and do the same. The thinking is that by duplicating someone’s beliefs, habits, actions, etc., you will achieve similar results as they have achieved.

Is it that simple? Yes…and No.

Yes, achievers follow fundamental principles of success such as effective time management, goal setting, delegation, playing to their strengths, financial management and focus on their goals as well as many others. They also display a passion in their work. Simple right?

No, you can’t do exactly what they do and expect the same exact results. You aren’t them and you don’t live their lives. You can, however, follow the principles they have followed and adapt those principles to your own life.

First, you must connect to your passion. What drives you, excites you, motivates you? Build a business and a lifestyle around that.

Second, get your idea on paper. Visions and goals are great but until you commit your ideas to paper, you won’t get any closer to your dreams.

Third, build a team. Find others who are excited about your idea (hence the written plan!) and would like to participate in the development of that idea.

Fourth, call me @ 877 Go 7 Stages and I will give you a FREE consultation on how to take your business and life to the next level!

“Welcome to my office”

Posted by Carl Gould on August 02, 2010

…was the greeting that I received when I walked into the Men’s Bathroom at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. And he meant it! I walked towards the urinals only to find them all “taken”. Noticing this the attendant immediately opened the door to one of the stalls, sanitized the toilet seat with liquid sanitizer and a disposable towel, and held the door for me as I entered!

The attendant, upon my exit from the stall, had a towel ready for me to dry my hands, asked which soap dispenser I’d prefer, and waved his hand in front of the sensor to start the water from the faucet.

The cynic in me though, “OK, he’s working to fits.” No tip cup to be found…anywhere. And wasn’t soliciting tips from anyone.

I was amazed how cheerfully (and professionally) he went about his job. He wasn’t overbearing at all. The little things made such an impression on me as well as the travelers who passed through the attendant’s office. Well done!

Oh, by the way, virtually every person that I saw during my visit to the ‘office’ gave the attendant a generous tip.
